A year revisited February 29, 2008

As more and more musicians contemplate making the move to linux for audio work I thought it relevant when I
came across a link on the LAU (Linux Audio User) mailing list to Sebastian Tschöpel’s blog and one post in particular that reflects on his experience making the move, or as Sebastian puts it:
I thought it would be time to sum up the experiences I made in the past year working (irregular) with Linux as audio production platform.

Over a year ago I posted about my fondness for this mozilla powered offshoot. How has it changed? Does it still rock?
Pidgin - Instant Messaging for the masses! February 16, 2008

Doesn’t everyone instant message nowadays? Seems like you are offered a new protocol every time you turn the corner… sign up with a major ISP, get a new webmail account, whatever… but what about an open source, cross platform chat client that does it all? Pidgin comes pretty darn close to filling that bill!

Songbird is a cross-platform web browser based on mozilla… that also finds music for you on the web… that also plays music, both from the web and your local drives… and acts as a music organizer letting you categorize, sort, search, and re-discover your tunes and playlists! Did I mention that it’s a web browser?!?!

Some of you might have noticed I haven’t posted much on the linux front (or any other for that matter!) for awhile… This post is likely to be the first of several in a related series and the first to explain why I haven’t posted and why I am again now!
To make a long story short I moved across the state, built a new computer and ended up using wireless as my only connection to the net for the very first time…

Scanner to Fax on broadband January 12, 2008

The other day I did a stupid thing. I accidentally locked the keys to vehicle in the ignition with it running. And no, I didn’t have a spare! A call to a local locksmith fixed it in about 30 seconds for which I was billed a nice US$65! Luckily the locksmith said that I *might* be able to get it reimbursed through my insurance company. Why yes! They were happy to reimburse me! All I had to do was slap a 41 cent stamp on an envelope and drop the invoice in the mail or I could fax the invoice to them! Sweet! FAX! Instant gratification! How hard could it be?

Obviously this is my PERSONAL OPINION (that green eyeball over there means “personal”) so take it with a
grain of salt but no, emusic isn’t paying me to write this post… in fact I’m doubtful they even know it exists!

Ubuntu Studio: An interview with Project Manager Cory Kontros January 27, 2007

I’ve known about, written about and even participated in the Ubuntu Studio project (in a limited capacity) in the past but
had pretty much given it up as a project with good ideas but still a long way from any sort of maturity or release as a “distro” in it’s own right… until a link on Digg.com appeared quite recently. It seems that the project has found new momentum with new leadership and I thought I would take a closer look for myself.
