Listen to this! Calexico! July 3, 2010

Calexico, Calexico, Calexico!!!!

I’m going to say this right off the bat:  Anyone who writes a single paragraph review of any Calexico album didn’t listen to it.  It’s that simple.  Because their music is not.

I’m playing nearly all of their discography today and the more I listen to them the more I admire and respect them!  Based in the sun parched realm of Tuscon, Arizona, Calexico defies easy categorization.  Sure, there is a definite “tex mex” flavor to a lot of their music, maybe some blues and more than one tip of the hat to old school country (NOT the commercialized glitter pop stuff they play today), but there is also some serious jazz going on here, on more than one track from more than one CD, and maybe more than a smattering of experimental rock.  And what’s that?  Synth?!?  Dub?  Samples????  No matter what you pick out from these guy’s sound it’s almost always interesting, fun, more often than not cinematic, and uniquely Calexico.

Check them out on Pandora if nothing else!

Dub FX: One Man Band… redefined! February 2, 2010

Recently a buddy of mine turned me onto a “street muscian” from Australia that goes by the name “Dub FX”.  Dub FX has been travelling the world for the last couple of years performing in public squares, shopping centers, etc.  With the help of a hand dolly to haul around a couple of car batteries, an amplified speaker, and some very cool gear including a loop station and some effects pedals, he’s basically redefined what a “one man band” might mean!

This is a tutorial on how to listen to  “local” radio stations on your computer!

Why?  I know, I can hear some of you saying right now “just turn on a fricken radio!”  Well, this method has a couple of advantages… one, it doesn’t require a radio!  Two, it might let you listen to more channels, with better clarity, than you will get on your typical AM/FM, even some of those “HD radio” streams!  Ok, ok, YMMV (Your Mileage May Vary) based on where you live.  But, for an example, I live south of Seattle and using this method I can listen to any of 67 “local” radio stations from my desktop, most of which I would be lucky to tune in at all on a convential radio where I live.  I would be interested in hearing from you that live in more rural areas too!   I’m not sure how or why the software I will detail in this tutorial works the way it does but I’m curious to know how well it works in other parts of the world too.  Let me know, mkay?

Let’s get started!

Think vinyl is dead?  But it’s not!  Far from it in fact.  And as evidence take a look at Universal Music Group’s “Back to Black Vinyl” campaign celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the LP (“long play”) album!   I know, I know, I’m sure at least one reader must think this born of quaint nostalgia known to frequent the “boomer” generation but think about it…  when is the last time you saw a new release on cassette, reel to reel or 8 track?

By contrast vinyl has never gone away completely and fairly recent marketing schemes seem to indicate it might be making a bigger come back than you may think…

HDTracks is a relatively new service that offers *extremely* high quality music for downloads.  Their library is still relatively small but their prices are quite reasonable and the significant difference between their high bit rate offerings and 128kbs mp3s offered by their more well known competitors is literally astounding when played over similarly high quality speakers and equipment!

Songbird

Songbird is a cross-platform web browser based on mozilla… that also finds music for you on the web… that also plays music, both from the web and your local drives… and acts as a music organizer letting you categorize, sort, search, and re-discover your tunes and playlists! Did I mention that it’s a web browser?!?!

Obviously this is my PERSONAL OPINION (that green eyeball over there means “personal”) so take it with a grain of salt but no, emusic isn’t paying me to write this post…  in fact I’m doubtful they even know it exists!

Think you know something about electronic music? Think you know the history of “Rave” and “Techno”?! Not like Ishkur knows it! Ok, he even says himself that the purpose of the project is to entertain first and be informative last. (more…)

Well, here we go!

As I said in my previous post I’ve been playing with Splicemusic a lot lately, even to the point of neglecting my blog!

What I have for you today is called “Tubes v.3”. It’s the third remix of a song I started a week ago and just could never get it to a point where I considered it “done”.

Cool Slimserver trick #1: Cover Art!

It depends on which “theme” you use for your web interface but most of them support cover art, even browsing by cover art! This also requires that each CD has it’s own folder; not a bad idea if you are just getting started with this stuff and you have a big collection you intend to rip (I use a directory structure like “music/artist/cd title/songs”!)

Setting up SIMPLE and FLAC is easy!

Just install both applications by clicking on the installers. Simple has the most “complicated” interface but all the controls should be intuitive if you look at them a bit. Anyway, first you want to pop a CD to rip into one of your PCs drives and start Simple by clicking on the “CD ->MP3” desktop icon…
