As a bit of a self-proclaimed “tree hugger” I know we can get kind of preachy about global warming, climate change, dependence on fossil fuels, pollution, etc. I’ve tried hard to resist the temptation to post a news update every other day concerning such topics because I think there is already enough of it out there. But recently a friend posted an AP photo that struck me so profoundly I just had to share it here too…
So here it is.
That is a photo of some of the results of the BP oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico as a wave begins to break on shore. To me it is almost strangely beautiful and the first image I’ve seen of the catastrophe that I really felt a need to post. I wont go on a long tirade about “see what happens?!?!” or anything. Just two short sentiments:
1) My heart goes out to those directly affected by this terrible event, possibly the worst man made disaster in history. It’s likely to surpass Chernobyl in overall cost by the time the finger pointing is done and someone finally figures out what to do with it. Many, many thousands of jobs, family legacies and heritage, are and will continue to suffer as a concequence, and the toll on wildlife and the enviroment is likely to be of staggeringly epic purportions.
2) The cost of our dependence on oil isn’t just measured in dollars and cents at the gas pump. With luck there is a silver lining to this cloud and maybe, just maybe, this is the wake up call we need to once and for all seriously commit to a future based on clean, renewable energy.
