As a bit of a self-proclaimed “tree hugger” I know we can get kind of preachy about global warming, climate change, dependence on fossil fuels, pollution, etc.  I’ve tried hard to resist the temptation to post a news update every other day concerning such topics because I think there is already enough of it out there.  But recently a friend posted an AP photo that struck me so profoundly I just had to share it here too…

Ideas for New Games July 2, 2010

60px-Gnome-joysticksvg.png I posted this on a forum for a major game company in a thread where members were invited to share their ideas about “Ideas for New Games”.  I put a lot of time and thought into  my post and thought it might be worthwhile to save it here as well.  The original thread can be found by clicking >here<.

I’ve been an FPS (First Person Shooter) player since the original DOOM, have played these games extensively and watched them evolve and progress over the last (nearly) two decades.  Before that I was a paper-and-pencil wargamer and RPG’er (Role Playing Games) and perhaps even a “rules junky”… collecting obscure games and rule books just to  study the mechanics and the different ways of making a good game.

New York gets it’s first solar electric vehicle charging station January 7, 2010

One of my favorite “green” blogs, Inhabitat , posted an article about New York getting it’s first solar electric vehicle charging station.  I’ve seen electric cars before and even ones that charged off of solar but this particular package suggests what’s right on so many different levels that I just had to post about it here too.  Now just imagine what might be possible to build on this concept:  (more…)

I sat down to watch a little TV and spotted an episode of Top Gear, one of my favorite shows, had been recorded on my DVR.  It was an episode I had never seen before so I would have watched it anyway but this particular episode was absolutely EPIC!

I decided to jump on the beta bandwagon again and see if “Seven” really was a new windows or just Vista with a new name.  Here are my first  impressions but like anything else the old saying “you can’t judge a book by it’s cover” may apply…

Music piracy a growing problem? January 19, 2009

I wrote this as an answer to a thread (on a sim racing forum of all places!) concerning a story from the BBC about how music piracy was still an  ever growing problem.  I spent too much time thinking about and writing my response to have it buried in a forum so thought I would put it here too.  As always YOUR comments and opinions are welcome!

Komando Kritic: Best way to archive files for serveral years October 14, 2006

Posted by oktyabr in Komando Kritic, opinions, personal, technology.

Kim’s show actually had no blatant faults with it today although to be honest I only caught about half the program as work kept me away from the radio on and off all morning, but with a little effort I think I can squeeze a post or two out of today’s show 😉

Komando Kritic: Should I buy an iPod? October 9, 2006

Recently as heard on the Kim Komando show a caller inquired about whether or not an iPod was a “good deal”.

1) Caller is a music teacher and on a “teacher’s budget”.

2) Caller would like to use mp3 player to record “talk radio shows”.

3) Caller would also like to be able to record material from class to playback, for instructional purposes.

Komando Kritic: Update Windows 98 machine? October 9, 2006

As recently heard on the Kim Komando show a caller presented his question about the security of Windows 98, which he had installed on a machine he purchased… errr… in 1998! Specifically the caller was aware that Microsoft no longer updates security patches and the like for ’98… it is officially *unsupported*.

1) The caller claimed that he rarely used this computer online… occasionally for checking email, weather reports, etc.

2) The computer was actually used little for anything extraordinary… I recall that the machine in question was used for doing taxes and the like and perhaps a little solitaire.

This is the first post I will write to fill a new category on this blog called “Komando Kritic”.

Kim Komando, “America’s Digital Goddess”, is the host of the “Kim Komando” show, a nationally broadcast radio program that I get here in Eastern Washington 7-10AM on Saturday mornings.

She also has, of course, a website:

Flock, how I love thee, let me count the ways… July 4, 2006

Ok, this post is just a /hug and a /smile for my beloved Flock webbrowser, because I love it so 🙂

Let me put it short and sweet…  If you blog you owe it to yourself to try Flock!

Once it’s properly configured blogging is a breeze…  drag and drop photos from your computer to an online archive (I use photobucket), preview them in Flock’s image bar at the top of the browser, drag them to a new blog post!

At the bottom of the browser is the “snippets” button… click this, drag *anything* of interest, even make little post-it-note type of text scraps and store them there until you want to use them!

Instant access to online bookmarks! Even imports them to a new installation automagically!

Blog *anything* with a simple highlight (optional) and a right-click!

Of course Flock has lots of other cool features too, most shared by Firefox… extensions, multiple tabs,  popup stoppers and more.

This is one sweet browser!

Vista: Something’s going on under the hood! July 4, 2006

For some reason GIMP decided to break! Not sure why or how to fix it but I was pleased with the sort of information Vista gives the user when this kind of thing happens! Check out the screenshot:

WIRELESS: Like XP Pro, Vista Beta automagically detected my Linksys WUSB11 ver.2.6 USB network interface and set it up for use almost instantly. This is a chip that I have yet to get working correctly in ANY of the linux distributions I use so I must say I’m a bit impressed

Last but not least, remember my earlier post where I said Vista couldn’t “see” any of the machines on my LAN? I tried rebooting it, reconfiguring it, nothing worked! So I leave the machine on all last night, get up this morning and start messing with network settings in prep to tinker with the wireless adapter and low and behold!

I read somewhere else that “Vista seems to need at least 24 hours of use to get it’s feet under itself.” There is definately something going on under the hood of this OS. It even seems faster and more stable than it did yesterday and I haven’t really done anything to it in regards to performance. Curious…
