Music Composition: MIDI studio for FREE!

If you don’t know what MIDI is it stands for “Musical Instrument Digital Interface” and encompasses not only common protocols that enable different software and hardware to exchange data but also may be thought of as a means of conveying the information itself (i.e., “.mid files”). If you need more than that it’s been around since the early 1980’s and google will turn up quite a few links Wink

Music Composition: VST wrappers aka Soft Synths for n00bs

I’m no musician!!! And this topic is much broader than I could possibly cover here by myself in any reasonable amount of time! But I absolutely love sound and music. I love pressing a button and making a sound, especially if it is a sound uniquely tuned by me. Are there others out there too? I think so… So let’s make a sound:

Music Compositon: Synthesizers and Effects

One of my sparkling gems in this category has to be ZynAddSubFx! This isn’t just a “synthesizer”, it’s a whole freakin synthesizer workshop! Polyphonic, multitimbral and microtonal, this bit of kit comes with so many bells and whistles that the author could probably write a 200+ page users manual, if he wanted to. Superior to many of the commercial soft-synths (and hard synths too!) out there this one won’t cost you a dime. Cross-platform too! Of course Zyn isn’t the only FREE “softsynth” out there!

Music Lovers Freeware: #4 Slimserver cover art? October 19, 2006

Cool Slimserver trick #1: Cover Art!

It depends on which “theme” you use for your web interface but most of them support cover art, even browsing by cover art! This also requires that each CD has it’s own folder; not a bad idea if you are just getting started with this stuff and you have a big collection you intend to rip (I use a directory structure like “music/artist/cd title/songs”!)

Music Lovers Freeware: #3 Setting up Simple and FLAC October 19, 2006

Setting up SIMPLE and FLAC is easy!

Just install both applications by clicking on the installers. Simple has the most “complicated” interface but all the controls should be intuitive if you look at them a bit. Anyway, first you want to pop a CD to rip into one of your PCs drives and start Simple by clicking on the “CD ->MP3” desktop icon…

Yeah, but why only FREE?

Because one of my essential beliefs is simply that creativity should never be hindered by whether or not you have money to spend!

~sigh~

Well, we “adopted” another cat yesterday… errr… more honestly perhaps, he adopted us!

The story goes like this… we were first introduced to “Tiger” when the neighbor’s daughter brought him home. He was supposed to go to her boyfriend when he moved but later found out that he couldn’t have pets at his new apartment! Anyway cat was forbade from being an indoor pet so he ended up outside.

Ok, so my wife guessed the wrong “meme” I was supposed to reply to mostly because blogspot has some problems with updating webpages… Hey, there is a reason (or three) that I use wordpress now instead 😉

Anyway, this is the meme I’m supposed to reply to… aka “8 Things I find amazing, in picture form“. Ok, here it goes…

Doh!

Meowkaat tagged me! Now since I know her personally and had my wife close at hand to guide me I was instructed that what I must do to fulfill this bizarre obligation is to fill out a 10 point questionaire. How fun! Anyway, here it goes:

Kim’s show actually had no blatant faults with it today although to be honest I only caught about half the program as work kept me away from the radio on and off all morning, but with a little effort I think I can squeeze a post or two out of today’s show 😉

Recently as heard on the Kim Komando show a caller inquired about whether or not an iPod was a “good deal”.

1) Caller is a music teacher and on a “teacher’s budget”.

2) Caller would like to use mp3 player to record “talk radio shows”.

3) Caller would also like to be able to record material from class to playback, for instructional purposes.

Komando Kritic: Update Windows 98 machine? October 9, 2006

As recently heard on the Kim Komando show a caller presented his question about the security of Windows 98, which he had installed on a machine he purchased… errr… in 1998! Specifically the caller was aware that Microsoft no longer updates security patches and the like for ’98… it is officially *unsupported*.

1) The caller claimed that he rarely used this computer online… occasionally for checking email, weather reports, etc.

2) The computer was actually used little for anything extraordinary… I recall that the machine in question was used for doing taxes and the like and perhaps a little solitaire.
