Facebook!  How I love thee… How I HATE thee!

It seems as if Facebook has put a real dent in the more traditional examples of self-publishing, including this very blog.  Is this a good thing?  Well… it means that maybe you have an easier time finding like-minded people to have topical discussions with.  Want to know the right way to milk a yak?  Yup, there is a facebook group or page for it.  And yet all is not sunny in the land of Facebook!  It has many small problems that I am personally perplexed as to why they exist!

Nigeria scam victim compensation! July 6, 2010

File this one under “Just when you think you’ve seen it all!”

I just got this email today… I swear!  It said this:

NIGERIA SCAM VICTIM COMPENSATION: Email: *****@**********

It has reached the office of the Federal Govt of Nigeria that you were scammed before so the Govt has decided to compensate you with the sum of $70,000.00, Contact Barrister Etters and pay a fee of just $80 for funds release . Send email to *****@***********

Now everyone has HEARD about the Nigerian email scams, right?  RIGHT?!?!?  Yeah, I’m sure there is at least one or two innocently naive grandparents or otherwise NOT internet savvy folks that have actually sent money to such ridiculous scams but are the numbers that high that the scammers feel they can be even more profitable by pretending to compensate the victims in a new scam?  These guys should really find another line of “work”.

Get Flock

My favorite web browser now integrates twitter, flickr, facebook and more with it’s new “Broadcast Anything” feature.  More good stuff where that came from too!  Check out the “What’s New” videos:  http://www.flock.com/tour/new.php

web20.jpg

Recently I went in search of a way to collaborate with others in a structured, nested manner, preferably for free.  After taking a look at a few possibilities I stumbled across Springnote and while I’m still not quite sure exactly when the hammer will fall (i.e., how they plan to eventually make money from it), it has quickly earned my praise and respect as possibly one of the most useful webapps of 2008! Doesn’t everyone instant message nowadays? Seems like you are offered a new protocol every time you turn the corner… sign up with a major ISP, get a new webmail account, whatever… but what about an open source, cross platform chat client that does it all? Pidgin comes pretty darn close to filling that bill!

Songbird

Songbird is a cross-platform web browser based on mozilla… that also finds music for you on the web… that also plays music, both from the web and your local drives… and acts as a music organizer letting you categorize, sort, search, and re-discover your tunes and playlists! Did I mention that it’s a web browser?!?!

personal.jpgThe other day I did a stupid thing. I accidentally locked the keys to vehicle in the ignition with it running. And no, I didn’t have a spare! A call to a local locksmith fixed it in about 30 seconds for which I was billed a nice US$65! Luckily the locksmith said that I *might* be able to get it reimbursed through my insurance company. Why yes! They were happy to reimburse me! All I had to do was slap a 41 cent stamp on an envelope and drop the invoice in the mail or I could fax the invoice to them! Sweet! FAX! Instant gratification! How hard could it be?

Well, here we go!

As I said in my previous post I’ve been playing with Splicemusic a lot lately, even to the point of neglecting my blog!

What I have for you today is called “Tubes v.3”. It’s the third remix of a song I started a week ago and just could never get it to a point where I considered it “done”.

Ok, I’m guilty…

I’ve been having so much fun playing around with Splicemusic myself that I have totally ignored that fact that this website is definately aching for a blogpost! So, better late than never, let me introduce Splicemusic beta!

Ever wanted to remix some songs? Ever heard a cool drum break that got you thinking exactly what you would do with it if you had the software? Have a couple of recordings you did as the “human beatbox” on your desktop microphone and nothing fun to do with them? Well, my friends, Splice
may be exactly what the doctor ordered…

Flock, how I love thee, let me count the ways… July 4, 2006

Ok, this post is just a /hug and a /smile for my beloved Flock webbrowser, because I love it so 🙂

http://www.flock.com

Let me put it short and sweet…  If you blog you owe it to yourself to try Flock!

Once it’s properly configured blogging is a breeze…  drag and drop photos from your computer to an online archive (I use photobucket), preview them in Flock’s image bar at the top of the browser, drag them to a new blog post!

At the bottom of the browser is the “snippets” button… click this, drag *anything* of interest, even make little post-it-note type of text scraps and store them there until you want to use them!

Instant access to online bookmarks! Even imports them to a new installation automagically!

Blog *anything* with a simple highlight (optional) and a right-click!

Of course Flock has lots of other cool features too, most shared by Firefox… extensions, multiple tabs,  popup stoppers and more.

This is one sweet browser!

Vista and IE 7 July 4, 2006

I must say I’m a bit impressed with the latest beta of IE 7 as well. The tabs are fast and responsive and I prefer the “close” button on each tab (ala Flock as opposed to a single close button like in Firefox) and the quick tab add button is nice and intuitive. I wish I could figure out how to find my bookmarks though!

–edit–

DOH! It’s the “star” icon, which does something completely different in my browser of choice (www.flock.com)

Introducing Flock Beta 1
Posted Monday, Tuesday, Jun 13 by Bart Decrem

 Hello again,

We are delighted to introduce the first beta release of the Flock browser, aka Flock 0.7. Here’s what it is, what it isn’t, and a company update.

Back in October, when we introduced the company and released our first developer preview, we generated quite a bit of attention. A lot of people were intrigued by the concepts we introduced, but one of the critiques we heard over and over was that the product wasn’t ready for prime time (it wasn’t – the version number was 0.4.something, but we did brag a bit too much). Moreover, some people wondered what problem we were trying to solve that Firefox plus a set of extensions couldn’t solve. For the last six months or so, we’ve kept our nose to the grindstone, and now we’re inviting you to try out our first beta release.
