After there was so many problems for so many people getting GIMP for Windows to run under Vista (in fact it is still one of my most visited posts!) I wanted to tackle that one with “Seven” right off the bat…

I decided to jump on the beta bandwagon again and see if “Seven” really was a new windows or just Vista with a new name.¬† Here are my first¬† impressions but like anything else the old saying “you can’t judge a book by it’s cover” may apply…

Scanner to Fax on broadband January 12, 2008

personal.jpgThe other day I did a stupid thing. I accidentally locked the keys to vehicle in the ignition with it running. And no, I didn’t have a spare! A call to a local locksmith fixed it in about 30 seconds for which I was billed a nice US$65! Luckily the locksmith said that I *might* be able to get it reimbursed through my insurance company. Why yes! They were happy to reimburse me! All I had to do was slap a 41 cent stamp on an envelope and drop the invoice in the mail or I could fax the invoice to them! Sweet! FAX! Instant gratification! How hard could it be?

Excellent article written by Dominic Humphries.

Possibly the best article I have ever read concerning the differences between linux and windows. Archived here for posterity under a Creative Commons License. Newest version of document is available at http://linux.oneandoneis2.org/LNW.htm

I’m sure you still cannot use Linux without opening a single terminal window December 15, 2006

The title of this article, “I’m sure you still cannot use a Linux without opening a single terminal window”, is a line taken from the tail end of a blog post about “Biggest Linux Problem: it makes users think” which while I found the article a somewhat interesting read I thought the statement about opening a command line was conceptually wrong…

So what’s this sexy new *buntu have under the hood?

More importantly (at least to me!) is it any good for multimedia?

Today the official announcement that “herd 1”, the first public pre-release for what will eventually become Ubuntu 7.04, code named “Feisty Fawn” made it’s way around the linux news sites.

Being a debian and seeing how I finally managed to completely destroy my previous 64Studio install (no fault of the distro itself!) I thought I would give it a quick spin around the block.

Music Composition: MIDI studio for FREE!

If you don’t know what MIDI is it stands for “Musical Instrument Digital Interface” and encompasses not only common protocols that enable different software and hardware to exchange data but also may be thought of as a means of conveying the information itself (i.e., “.mid files”). If you need more than that it’s been around since the early 1980’s and google will turn up quite a few links Wink

Music Composition: VST wrappers aka Soft Synths for n00bs

I’m no musician!!! And this topic is much broader than I could possibly cover here by myself in any reasonable amount of time! But I absolutely love sound and music. I love pressing a button and making a sound, especially if it is a sound uniquely tuned by me. Are there others out there too? I think so… So let’s make a sound:

Music Compositon: Synthesizers and Effects

One of my sparkling gems in this category has to be ZynAddSubFx! This isn’t just a “synthesizer”, it’s a whole freakin synthesizer workshop! Polyphonic, multitimbral and microtonal, this bit of kit comes with so many bells and whistles that the author could probably write a 200+ page users manual, if he wanted to. Superior to many of the commercial soft-synths (and hard synths too!) out there this one won’t cost you a dime. Cross-platform too! Of course Zyn isn’t the only FREE “softsynth” out there!

Setting up SIMPLE and FLAC is easy!

Just install both applications by clicking on the installers. Simple has the most “complicated” interface but all the controls should be intuitive if you look at them a bit. Anyway, first you want to pop a CD to rip into one of your PCs drives and start Simple by clicking on the “CD ->MP3” desktop icon…

Yeah, but why only FREE?
