After there was so many problems for so many people getting GIMP for Windows to run under Vista (in fact it is still one of my most visited posts!) I wanted to tackle that one with “Seven” right off the bat…

I decided to jump on the beta bandwagon again and see if “Seven” really was a new windows or just Vista with a new name.  Here are my first  impressions but like anything else the old saying “you can’t judge a book by it’s cover” may apply…

Here is one of those posts I write more for my personal reference in the future but I´m happy if someone else gets some use from the information too.

Today I´m posting from my new Ubuntu Studio 8.10 install.  This is after trying several new releases of other distros first and even though Ubuntu Studio is still missing a decent realtime kernel it still somehow ended up on my harddrive!  Here is the main reason why…

A year revisited February 29, 2008

As more and more musicians contemplate making the move to linux for audio work I thought it relevant when Inormal_DJ-tux-3_overlord59-tux.jpg came across a link on the LAU (Linux Audio User) mailing list to Sebastian Tschöpel’s blog and one post in particular that reflects on his experience making the move, or as Sebastian puts it:

I thought it would be time to sum up the experiences I made in the past year working (irregular) with Linux as audio production platform.

Songbird

Songbird is a cross-platform web browser based on mozilla… that also finds music for you on the web… that also plays music, both from the web and your local drives… and acts as a music organizer letting you categorize, sort, search, and re-discover your tunes and playlists! Did I mention that it’s a web browser?!?!

Some of you might have noticed I haven’t posted much on the linux front (or any other for that matter!) for awhile… This post is likely to be the first of several in a related series and the first to explain why I haven’t posted and why I am again now!

To make a long story short I moved across the state, built a new computer and ended up using wireless as my only connection to the net for the very first time…

Scanner to Fax on broadband January 12, 2008

personal.jpgThe other day I did a stupid thing. I accidentally locked the keys to vehicle in the ignition with it running. And no, I didn’t have a spare! A call to a local locksmith fixed it in about 30 seconds for which I was billed a nice US$65! Luckily the locksmith said that I *might* be able to get it reimbursed through my insurance company. Why yes! They were happy to reimburse me! All I had to do was slap a 41 cent stamp on an envelope and drop the invoice in the mail or I could fax the invoice to them! Sweet! FAX! Instant gratification! How hard could it be?

I’ve known about, written about and even participated in the Ubuntu Studio project (in a limited capacity) in the past but had pretty much given it up as a project with good ideas but still a long way from any sort of maturity or release as a “distro” in it’s own right… until a link on Digg.com appeared quite recently. It seems that the project has found new momentum with new leadership and I thought I would take a closer look for myself.

You know in these days where over half of the modern world now connects by “broadband” as opposed to dialup I find it particularly interesting when technology not only increases our bandwidth but rather improves how we use it. aacPlus aka AAC+ aka HE-AAC is just one such improvement, especially if you listen to as much streaming music as I do!
