Success! Ran Mepis 3.4-2rc1 and added a realtime kernel from demudi plus a bunch of packages…
KDE still gives me trouble with arts errors but jackstart seems to work well. A couple of xruns but not bad for a start.
Might try ubuntu 5.10 + realtime (as posted on link above) next.
